Turning 65
What to do, and when. In order.
Start seven months before your birthday. Nothing here takes more than an afternoon.
The timeline.
7 months out
Write down your Part B start date. Decide whether you’re taking Part B now or delaying for employer coverage.
4 months out
Enroll in A and B at ssa.gov/medicare if you’re not on Social Security yet. List your doctors and prescriptions.
3 months out
Pick the path: Plan G or Advantage. This is the one that’s hard to undo.
2 months out
Get Plan G quotes from every carrier in your ZIP. Pick a Part D plan from your prescription list.
1 month out
Submit the Plan G application and the Part D enrollment. Both start the same day as Part B.
Your birthday month
Three cards arrive: Medicare, Plan G, Part D. Carry all three.
Every year after
Oct 15 to Dec 7, re-check Part D. When the Plan G rate letter comes, ask for a rate check.
Still working at 65?
With group coverage from an employer of 20 or more, you can delay Part B with no penalty. When you leave, you get 8 months to enroll and a new 6-month Plan G window. Take Part A now anyway. It’s free.
Take Part B on time if.
Fewer than 20 employees.
COBRA.
Retiree coverage.
A marketplace plan.
The mistakes we see most.
- 01
Letting the six-month window close.
After it, most states allow health questions.
- 02
Skipping Part D because you take nothing.
The penalty is permanent. A low-cost plan avoids it.
- 03
Buying the first quote.
The same Plan G next door can be $50 less.
- 04
Picking Advantage for the $0 premium.
Fine if it fits. Just know getting Plan G later usually means health questions.
What to have handy when we talk.
Your Medicare card or Part B date.
Your doctors.
Your prescriptions.
Your current plan, if any.
That’s it. Fifteen minutes.
Fifteen minutes on the phone usually settles it.
Free, no obligation, a licensed agent. Not a call center.
